Selective Mutism: Breaking the Silence

Explore Selective Mutism with Senior Speech & Language Therapist Bláthíne Maguire from Sensational Kids.
Selective Mutism is an anxiety disorder which affects a child’s ability to speak in certain settings despite speaking in other settings. It usually commences in early childhood, often when the child starts nursery/school. Those with Selective Mutism speak fluently in some situations but remain consistently silent in others.

This course will dive into what is Selective Mutism and the diagnostic criteria. We will look at common characteristics and causes as well as ‘how we can help’. The training will be particularly helpful for teachers who may have children with Selective Mutism in their classroom. It will also aid school staff to recognise this disorder and recommend simple adjustments to support these pupils.

Parents would also benefit from the course as we will look at what selective mutism is/is not and the recommended support. A number of ideas will be given on how to talk to the child, what to do in certain situations and what to say when challenges arise.
