Description: Autistics have so much to offer and supporting them to thrive is a very rewarding work! The numbers have grown so much over the past 20+ years and many interventions have arrived for therapists to consider and trial. The continuum of severity can range from very accomplished to a sense of “separateness” from relationship and social interaction. This workshop will consider a respectful awareness of building a successful relationship with an autistic, no matter where on the continuum of neurodiversity they may find themselves. This mode of work does not focus on “changing” anyone into being different to fit into the world, but rather focuses on who they are as persons in themselves. The strategies discussed and used in the client recorded material of actual sessions focuses on decreasing anxiety while promoting interaction, always considering where the autistic is really at and meeting them where they are.
Outline / Agenda:
- Regulation and Arousal
- Relationship and use of self
- Recorded session material and discussion of strategies
Learning Objectives:
The attendee will be able to:
- Describe the concept of regulation as it impacts on relational quality
- View recorded material that supports the importance of attunement in therapeutic relationships
- Consider at least 15 strategies that facilitates intrinsic motivation in autistics to want to remain engaged in the therapeutic relationship
Presenter: Maude Le Roux, OTR/L, SIPT, DIR/Floortime Expert Training Leader
Bio: Maude is a globally known presenter on a variety of different topics and a mentor to many therapists across borders. She graduated in South Africa in 1984, and opened her private practice in Glen Mills, USA in 2001. Maude obtained her DIR Certificate in 2005 and became an Expert training leader in 2011 for ICDL (Interdisciplinary Council of Developmental and Learning Disorders). She is a leading speaker at multiple international conferences over the years. She opened the Maude Le Roux Academy in January 2019 as her travel schedule disallowed her the pleasure of feeling “grounded” in her own home! Maude accomplished multiple certifications throughout the years and continues her journey of being a life-long learner. She co-authored the book, Our Greatest Allies, with Lauren O’Malley and has contributed chapters in other books of which the most recent would be in the Hope for Healing book of ATTACh considering trauma informed care. Her wish is for every therapist to come fully into their own being, be their authentic selves, so their clients can also transition from sometimes fragmented places to a new sense of wholeness.
